“This article paper is one of the "Most Read" in the LinkedIn Publishing and Academia platforms that have been provided a course background based on observation and hands-on experiences in the building built design and construction involving any facilities. Additionally, this article discussed the environmental factors that define the desert environment afflicting environmental possibilism in valuing environmental green building practices.”
Environmental Factors Define Desert Environment
The socio-cultural-economic development and the environmental factors or the ecological factors ecosystem-based model aspects such as culture, technology, economy, and power have governed the dynamics that exist between the growing population and its biotic and abiotic environmental surroundings (Rambo, 1983). In general, as far as ecological management is concerned and as viewed by the public sector, the actions are most frequently directed at the changing or modifying macro and micro-biotic phenomena, landscapes, escapes, air, and water flow and quality, or installing infrastructures that will mitigate and control nature’s impacts on human beings, which is driven by the ecological factors.
The environmental determinism and environmental possibilism are both emphasizing the ecological factors and the environmental factors as the driving forces on the development of human culture and the human-altered environmental process of land use planning.
Qatar is one of the examples of environmental factors in the desert environment. And as a country and part of the Middle East Region, the land is rich in Oil & Gas and one of the wealthiest countries in the world. The compelling changes in the country have symbolic for the Qataris to be proud of, and that’s because of the natural resources they've got and used as a source of the country’s governance towards a sustainable environment and quality life within their socio-cultural-economic development.
The construction development multiplies on all sectors that have been fueled by the Oil & Gas exploration and that means of their rapid growth in the infrastructure and building built-environment for a decade and until now similar to the neighboring nations in the GCC region especially in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
However, due to the ecological factors, as they are experiencing technological innovation in the current generation and this is the reason why the author working in Qatar as one of the migrant contributors in the development of the country's environment and buildings built environment.
Because of Qatar’s prosperity, many expatriates from around the world are coming in. However, most of them are not tourists as a usual norm happening in other countries, but an imported laborer/worker expertise in different skills working and living now in the Doha community.
The current population growth in Qatar is more than 1M+, including other people from other nations, and they are; Westerners, Europeans, Africans, and Asians. Among those settlers, Indians nationals outnumber Qatari citizens and monopolize the businesses, commercial and office establishments.
The ridiculous thing there, and because of populated Indians nationals living in Qatar for the past decades, Rupees became the monetary currency in the state before the Oil & Gas discovery and exploration, nevertheless, most Qatari that time was employed in fishing, diving, the agricultural sector and some of them as an expatriate working in the nearby GCCs only for their family to survive.
But since the discovery of Oil & Gas and exploration started in the country, however, the development and evolution of government governance began by allowing Qatari’s professionals and businesses to grow in aligning with the construction activities in the country as part of Qatar's socio-cultural environmental development factors in the desert environment that can’t be denied as it was now.
The theories provided in the author’s articles of environmental possibilism from environmental determinism and with the above image (Figure 01) is a self-explanatory afflicting expatriate professional career venue as an output of ecological development and sustainable management of green aspects. And hence, by promoting their cultural values and beliefs whereas the Qatari’s now in the present time are enjoying their richness and subsidies provided by the Qatar government.
Qatar, environmentally, has no upland and lowland areas in the country. All settlement lies on the environmental desert land along coastal, and one of the examples is shown in the above figure, View of Corniche West Bay Area, (picture was taken by rvgomeseria), whereas development in the environment are obviously changed from a desert environment into grassland, trees, and building-built environment developmental-ecological factors. And this is one of the examples given by Harris and Ullman, a Multiple Nuclei Theory as one of the structures of environmental management in the urban ecosystem in the society’s development of the continuous infrastructure and building built construction since 2004.
With the picture below (Figure 02) when the author came in Qatar last 2004, and as you can see, the building on the right side is known as Sheraton Hotel, which is the only existing 5-Star Hotel building being built in 2004 and up to the current year. And the known Olympic Tower is on the other side.
However, with the Environmental Possibilism and Ecological Factors in the Desert Environment, obviously, the development as seen in the image above (Figure 01), the grass and trees have been cultivated and planted as they invested to develop the country’s sustainable environmental vision. The road is too wide now, too many high-rise buildings have been built and constructed for different types of building mixed-usage is either owned by the government, commercial, offices, complexes, and residential establishments in the entire land especially at West Bay Area in the image above.
Furthermore, this will be a useful reference for future engineering research studies Environmental factors that define the desert environment in a simple manner and believes that there are still areas that would need enhancement; and hence, any suggestion that could further improve is highly appreciated.
