Insight
In today’s generation, Qatar was tagged as
one of the wealthiest countries in the world due to its environmental movement
and strategic development plan. Qatar had an excellent effect and value of
their wealth subsidized to its citizens as well as wealth sharing to all
expatriates working in the country. The tremendous development was influenced
by the neighboring developed countries whereby the growth and accomplishments
have tremendously changed the country’s buildings and infrastructure as the
author witnessed in more than a decade on what Qatar is now. That was Qatar
Emir’s political will and love to the country whereas initiated as part of the environmental
possibilism and the movement evolves since the author was in the
state in 2004 and up to the present. The great experiences that the author has
ever experienced in life, and can say, whereas all areas throughout the country
are in construction, and it is an incredible accomplishment because no other
countries can do the same as Qatar did. An amazing, right?
The environmental movement can’t be denied from
environmental
determinism into environmental
possibilism; however, the country’s progress will always affect
and spoiled the environment in reality. Hence, as an expatriate in Qatar, the
author learned and valued the Socio-Cultural
Principles of Human-Environment Interactions (HEIs) whereas the implication
applies within the camaraderie and other organizations involved. And this is
the reason, and we can’t blame why people from everywhere have had environmental
advocacy in raising their flags and fights for their ideology
and principles in protecting mother Earth in meeting a sustainable environment
for the next generation.
Environmental Movement Arguments
The good thing in Qatar’s environmental
movement is because of their wealth whereas they can do what they want to
accomplish in serving the citizens for the country because of their oil and gas
explorations as their means of income. However, in every exploration they made,
the environment suffers because of CO2 that mainly contributes to
global warming. But on the other side, the author was influenced by the
dramatic improvement of the country whereas involved primarily in the design
innovation on the country’s building built environment on different scales,
which until now, the author still part of the development for his family needs
and dreams to take.
When the author came in 2004 in the country,
the Oil & Gas exploration was already in operation and existence, however,
the development of buildings and infrastructure are just starting that time,
whereas the author was involved in the design development on both building
built environment and infrastructure as well as the progressing construction in
the country and most likely in the West Bay Area as shown in the above image (Figure
01) and being adopted from Flickr for this article presentation.
Moreover, in return, the author may say that
the environmental movement of Qatar’s Emir’s advocate is about the country’s
futuristic development with the ecological possibilism implications through
construction held. However, in the ecological construction concerns on the another side, the pollution
arises, which became a bit concerned by all citizens in the country.
Because of the development, Qatar
construction is one of the most intensive industrial practices and businesses
now, in spite of, whereas this is the leading cause of environmental pollution
from the excavations or digging grounds everywhere in the country. And these causes
are also from the buildings' footprints, road construction development, and
utilities trenching whereas all the dust and sands are flying over the
buildings constructions throughout the West Bay area. The assembly’s pollutions
produced and created in the construction that devastates the human-environmental
movement whereas mixed composting emotions to individuals especially of the
many construction workers employed.
The cause of Air Pollution has a negative
impact on everyone on-site, hence, it may cause injuries and total-sickness for
them to be hospitalized. In the author’s published article, “Environmental
Engineering in Built-Up Areas,” CEAI ViewPoint Journal; December
2019 Edition; Consulting Engineers Association of India; have explained and
discussed the repercussions of different type of pollutions to human as well as
the impact assessment and prevention that needs to be addressed.
In Qatar construction, whereby producing
1-ton of cement manufactured and provided by the manufacturer is roughly
equivalent to a ton of carbon dioxide emission from the burning of fossil fuels
used that have been tagged by the US EPA (United States Environmental
Protection Agency) as one of the third largest sources contributions of
greenhouse gas to the environment. And as part of the construction industry,
another factor being used is steel, and it is one of the major components in
the construction business which consumed as much as or roughly 8% to 10% energy
used by the manufacturers that contribute greenhouse gas to Mother Earth.
The environmental movement, aside from the construction
happening in the country that produces pollution and greenhouse gas in the
atmosphere is their oil and gas exploration that contributes to CO2
as well, which is not sustaining a sustainable environment at large, however,
part of the country’s growth.
In spite of construction development, the
beautiful picture below (Figure 02) located at the West Bay Doha (adopted from
the Qatar Living website) is one of the examples of Qatar’s Emir Advocacy for
the country on what the people needs, and that is another form of the
environmental movements may consider in the country. However, with all the
development in Qatar in a decade, even that is one of the advocacies of the
Emir; that helps in the first place for the Qatari people and to the
environment which has served of ways in the implications of environmental
movement within the country. And those accomplishments have changed the shape
and structure of the whole area anywhere in the country, and this is the
fantastic and amazing development ever experienced as an expatriate engineer.
Conclusion
As an Environmental
Advocate, the environmental movement does happening globally to
sustain a sustainable environment. Building and Construction
Engineering experienced, we learned that within the
construction, the contribution of oil and gas exploration, construction
development and its materials have factors that contribute to CO2,
greenhouse gas and pollutions
thereby, with global warming. Additionally, after the construction stage is
finished, the building maintenance costs to 40% of energy have been used for
lighting, air conditioning, heating, and other building electrical components
consumptions for the building facility. Wherefore, the maintenance is
responsible as well which provides 30% of the world's carbon emission as the
world is more concerned with climate change too.

However, because of the environmental
movement, all agencies have developed the development of Green Building and
adoption on it in the construction industry which is a good impression that
every country has been doing its best and initiatives in practicing a
sustainable green building to reduce the building carbon footprint in today’s
generation as every advocacy.
